Exceptionalism is not something you get to keep for life, like an honorary degree. Exceptionalism has to be earned every day.
Certain experiences dampen our ability to process the future. Urgency dominates. We must therefore list many things that bring us joy: activities, foods, locations, etc and match that list with a very short list of people that show up for us..that love us….(not those who love us).
Then we have to put 2-3 activities/week on the calendar for at least 2 weeks out. [Doing so] rebuilds our future planning centers of the brain and builds good habits of mind for self-care.
